The Pines’ present building was constructed
in the early 1980’s, being opened by Her Majesty the Queen
in 1984. It has served the community well and, despite being severely
damaged by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, it continues to provide shelter
for the thirty or so elderly residents of the Pines.
Work on the new building project is being approached in two phases. The first phase will consist of the erection of the shell, roof, and making water tight. The second phase will entail the remainder of the project including the internal fit out.
As we have commenced phase 1, the damaged section of the building has been demolished, the site cleared and the foundation has been laid. It is estimated that Phase 1 will be completed by mid-December 2010. We are trying to raise funds for Phase 2, and hoping that we will be able to secure sufficient funding so as to avoid an interruption between phases 1 and 2.
Cost of the new facility is estimated at CI$6.9 million and The Pines has raised over CI$3 million for Phase 1, which included the construction of the Day Room which has now been completed and is in use today.
